Spiridione.

The Teresian area was formed by burying the salt marshes that the current Piazza della Borsa and Piazza della Libertà. The spread of the new suburb was necessary not only the preservation of the Grand Canal, of natural origin, but rather its enlargement and deepening, structuring it to dock. The waste material was cutilized to createan open space, now Piazza del Ponte Rosso (Red Bridge square) from the color of the first wooden drawbridge which connected the two banks. Originally the channel came up to the present via Dante and a staircase led to a small esplanade in front of St. Anthony Church. Due to the expansion of the bank other two bridges were added: the "green" first, and the "white" later, so named despite the gray color, because the citizens wanted the Italian flag tricolor at least on the channel. Nowaday there are no longer the swing bridges, therefore the picturesque tall trees and large sails have been replaced from the fishing boats and a large part of the canal was covered. In addition to the aforementioned church of St. Anthony, another northworthy building is the church of St. Spyridon whose Carrara marble facade and dome in zinc reflects in the canal water.
