The Maggiore hospital is located between the area of the wide barrier and the Viale XX Settembre and has represented, from the moment of its realization, a structure that is avant-garde from a functional point of view. Designed and built in the first half of the nineteenth century (1833-1841) by arch. A. Juris and D. Corti, the project had to consider the future needs of the city in constant demographic and economic development. The Civic Hospital of Trieste came into operation on 22 July 1841, serving the population which at the time had risen to 78,000 inhabitants. The central body characterized by neoclassical dignity was later enlarged with other structures that occupied part of the original garden. The new technological center was inaugurated in 2013 with an area of six thousand square meters in which there are four surgery rooms, clinics, first care center and high precision machinery costing 10 million euros.
