If you want to spend your stay in Trieste a few steps from the sea you can choose a bed and breakfast in that stretch of coastal road named Riviera di Barcola. A pleseant walk will lead you from the Faro della Vittoria (Lighthouse of Victory), on the Gretta hill, to the promontory where the Miramare castle stands. The charming suburb of Barcola is particularly popular during the summer season when the stretch of Viale Miramare facing the sea is crowded by bathers. The Grignano bay, in front of the castle, houses the Marine Protected Area of Miramare, the only marine reserve in the region, where the staff of the WWF organizes snorkeling trips and diving. In the Old Port area, not far from the suburb of Barcola, is located within a jewel of industrial architecture, the hydrodynamic plant, a steam plant built in 1890 whose energy, with a network of 6,500 meters of piping, activated more than 100 cranes and 50 freight elevators.
